A Parent’s Guide to Newborn Photos in Indianapolis

Bringing a new baby into the world is exciting, overwhelming, emotional, and honestly… a little exhausting. As an Indianapolis newborn photographer (and someone who works with brand-new parents every single week), I know how many questions come up when you’re preparing for newborn photos.

If you’ve been wondering what actually happens during a newborn photography session and how to prepare without adding stress to your plate, you’re in the right place.

Let’s walk through what you can expect — from booking to gallery delivery — so you can relax and enjoy this sweet season.

When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos?

The ideal time for newborn photography is within the first 7–21 days after birth. During this window, babies are:

  • Extra sleepy
  • Naturally curly
  • More comfortable being gently posed

That said, life happens. If your baby arrives early, late, or you just need more time to recover, beautiful newborn photos are still absolutely possible beyond that window.

As an Indianapolis newborn photographer, I always recommend booking during your second trimester. We’ll place you on the calendar using your due date and adjust once your baby arrives.

What Should Parents Wear for Newborn Photos?

For parents, I always recommend:

  • Neutral tones (black, cream, beige, soft gray, muted earth tones)
  • Simple textures
  • Comfortable, flattering pieces you feel good in

Newborn sessions are about connection — not perfectly styled outfits. I’m always happy to help with wardrobe planning ahead of time so you feel confident walking into your session.

"Megan and her lovely assistant are simply the best. The studio environment with a newborn is first class! Soothing, relaxing and Megan is a baby whisperer!! They are true professionals. Would highly highly recommend to anyone searching for easy newborn pictures! Megan is the full package she takes care of everything."

Including Parents & Siblings

Newborn photography isn’t just about the baby — it’s about your growing family. I love incorporating:

  • Parents holding their newborn
  • Sweet sibling interactions
  • Quiet, emotional moments that tell your story

These images often become client favorites because they capture not just what your baby looked like, but how this season felt.

After Your Session: Proof Gallery & Image Delivery

About 5–7 days after your newborn session, we’ll schedule a proof gallery review where you’ll view a curated set of lightly edited images.

During this appointment, you’ll select your favorite photos and, if you’d like, design wall art or an album with guidance to make the process simple and stress-free.

Once your selections are made, I hand-edit each chosen image, paying close attention to skin tones and the little details you never want to forget. Your final images are delivered through a beautiful online gallery, making it easy to download, share, and enjoy for years to come.
